All You Need to Understand About BESA TR19®

BESA TR19® is a document published by the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) which states guidelines on how ventilation systems must be cleaned and maintained to a regulations standard. However, many are still unaware there are rules and regulations within BESA TR19® that need to be followed for your building to stay compliant and safe.

Thorough ventilation cleaning is an essential for every catering facility, which is why it’s a must that you read the BESA TR19® guide. This will clearly display the standard of hygiene your heating, ventilation and air conditioning ductwork systems should meet, ensuring your extract or ventilation system is at low risk of catching or spreading fire. We know understanding the jargon around BESA TR19® can be overwhelming, so below we highlighted everything you need to know, in an easy to understand way.

Safety First

According to BESA: “Out of the 24,000 accidental fires per year in commercial properties, a quarter of them are attributed to cooking and extraction systems.” Fires are an occupational hazard, but the impact is made far worse by poorly maintained grease extract and ductwork systems, as when not cleaned properly, fires will spread rapidly.

BESA TR19® regulations aren’t just there to minimise the risk of fire, they also prevent the build-up of harmful bacteria. Do you know that a build-up of grease will attract rats? The infections these might carry can spread through your systems if they’re not maintained properly, ultimately putting people’s health at risk.

What should be considered?

Every extract and ventilation system will have some parts that are hard to reach, these are usually ducts or extractor fans, but it is crucial they are kept clean to enable them to work to their full ability. One standard within BESA TR19® which you should adhere to, is improving the access to those hard to reach places.

You can make the necessary changes to ensure those hard to reach places become accessible. Start by looking at the designs of your systems – although you might not be able to change these, you can ensure they are easily accessible from different levels. Another solution is to install access door into ducts, so inspections can be carried out with ease.

How can we help?

All of our work is carried out to the latest BESA TR19® standards, which provide recognised levels of cleanliness confirmed by independent labatory testing. So, whether you’re a restaurant, hotel, or any other catering facility, our service is tailor-made to suit your needs, leaving you with peace of mind.  We offer a survey which includes a detailed report on what you need to do to comply with BESA TR19® and we can also carry out all of the works and access to make sure that your building is compliant.

Remember cleaning as far as you can reach simply isn’t effective enough to prevent a fire.
